Frogs in the Pond During the Winter

Post by Jake Langeslag »

For the first time this last winter, I saw a frog swimming around under the ice on my underwater pond camera. This frog swam across the pond and burrowed his way into the rock boulders along the ponds edge. I look forward to seeing how many of my frogs make it through the winter.

After the ice had formed on my pond this winter, I read somewhere that people have found that putting sand inside of a long, shallow flower pot works great for over-wintering frogs on the bottom of the pond. I look forward to trying this technique next winter to see if they will actually burrow their way into the sand!

My water feature has now been open for about a week now and I am eagerly awaiting the sighting of my first frog :!:
